Strains and Sprains
A strain or sprain can happen in an instant and needs the right care from day one. Physiotherapy settles pain and rebuilds strength for a safe return to activity.
Understanding strains and sprains
Strains and sprains are among the most common injuries we see. A strain is an overstretch or tear of a muscle or its tendon, such as a pulled hamstring or calf. A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, the tough tissue that connects bone to bone, with the ankle being the classic example. Both usually happen suddenly, during sport, a slip or an awkward movement, and they are graded from mild overstretch to a more serious partial or complete tear.
Most strains and sprains heal well when they are managed correctly from the start, yet the early days matter and a poorly rehabbed injury often leads to recurring problems or lasting weakness. Rest alone is rarely enough, because tissue needs the right loading at the right time to rebuild its strength. A prompt assessment confirms the grade of injury, checks that nothing is broken or fully torn, and sets the pace for a safe, confident return to activity.
Signs to look out for
- Sudden pain at the time of injury
- Swelling and bruising around the area
- Tenderness and warmth over the injury
- Reduced movement or difficulty bearing weight
- A feeling of weakness or instability
- Muscle spasm or a popping sensation at injury
Why it happens
- Sports and sudden changes of direction
- Slips, trips and falls
- Awkward landings or twisting
- Lifting or overstretching a muscle
- Inadequate warm-up before activity
- Previous injury or muscle fatigue
Treating strains and sprains at Rehoboth
Every plan starts with a thorough assessment and a written plan you can actually read. Same-week appointments across five Grand Cayman clinics.
Your first visit is a prompt assessment to grade the injury, check the joint or muscle involved and rule out a fracture or complete tear that needs a doctor. In the early stage we guide protection, relative rest, ice and compression to control swelling, and use gentle manual therapy and modalities such as ultrasound, laser and TENS to settle pain. Kinesiology taping can support the area while it calms down.
As healing allows, we progress a graded programme of movement, stretching and strengthening to rebuild the muscle or ligament and restore full range. We then add balance, control and sport specific drills so you return to work, training or play with confidence and a lower risk of re-injury. For high grade tears or joints that feel unstable, we coordinate with your doctor for imaging or an orthopaedic opinion. Same-week appointments are available across Grand Cayman.

Strains and Sprains questions, answered
A strain is an overstretch or tear of a muscle or tendon, while a sprain is an overstretch or tear of a ligament between bones. Both cause pain and swelling, and both respond well to prompt, graded physiotherapy.
In the early days protect the area, keep relatively rested, and use ice and compression to control swelling, while starting gentle movement as comfort allows. Book an assessment soon so we can grade the injury and guide your recovery.
Mild strains and sprains often settle within a couple of weeks, while more significant tears take several weeks to a few months. A structured physiotherapy plan helps you recover fully and lowers the risk of re-injury.
Most sprains do not need a scan and are diagnosed from a clinical assessment. If we suspect a fracture or a complete tear, we arrange imaging or refer you to a doctor, so nothing serious is missed.
Yes. We treat strains, sprains and other sports injuries at all five of our Grand Cayman clinics, with same-week appointments to start rehab quickly. We bill CINICO and major insurers directly.
Other musculoskeletal conditions we treat
Back and Neck Pain
Back and neck pain can make everyday movement, work and sleep difficult. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care ease pain and restore movement so you can get back to normal.
Joint Pain
Joint pain in the knees, hips, shoulders or hands can limit the things you love. Physiotherapy eases pain and rebuilds the strength that keeps your joints moving well.
Muscle Pain
Muscle pain, tightness and stubborn knots can nag for weeks. Hands-on physiotherapy and dry needling release tense muscles and help you move freely and comfortably again.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis causes joint pain and stiffness as cartilage wears over time. Physiotherapy helps you stay active, build strength and manage symptoms long term.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that inflames the joints. Alongside your doctor, physiotherapy helps keep you mobile, strong and functioning well.
Tenosynovitis
Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the sheath around a tendon, often in the wrist and thumb. Physiotherapy calms the irritation and restores pain-free movement.
