Ligament Injuries
Ligament sprains and tears, from rolled ankles to ACL injuries, can leave a joint painful, swollen and unstable. Physiotherapy rebuilds strength, control and confidence to return to activity.
Understanding ligament injuries
Ligaments are the strong bands of tissue that connect bone to bone and hold your joints stable. A ligament injury, or sprain, happens when these bands are overstretched or torn, most often at the ankle, knee, wrist or thumb. Injuries range from mild overstretching to partial and complete tears, such as an anterior cruciate ligament tear in the knee. Pain, swelling, bruising and a feeling of the joint giving way are common.
How a ligament injury is managed depends on which ligament is involved, the grade of the tear and the demands you want to return to. Many sprains recover well with structured rehabilitation, while some complete tears may need a surgical opinion before or instead of conservative care. Restoring strength, balance and joint control is essential, because a ligament that heals without proper rehabilitation often stays weak and prone to repeat injury.
Signs to look out for
- Pain at the injured joint
- Swelling and bruising
- A feeling of the joint giving way
- Instability or looseness
- Reduced movement or stiffness
- Difficulty bearing weight
- A pop or snap at the time of injury
Why it happens
- Rolling or twisting a joint
- Sports and pivoting movements
- Awkward landings or falls
- Direct blows to a joint
- Previous sprains that were not fully rehabilitated
- Reduced strength or balance
Treating ligament injuries at Rehoboth
Every plan starts with a thorough assessment and a written plan you can actually read. Same-week appointments across five Grand Cayman clinics.
Your first visit is a detailed assessment to identify the injured ligament, gauge the grade of the sprain and check joint stability. We then set a personalised plan and clear goals. Early on we help you control pain and swelling, protect the joint and restore safe movement with manual therapy, taping and graded exercise. We also guide you on load and activity so healing tissue is not overstressed while you stay as active as possible.
As the ligament heals we progress strength, balance and control work, then sport or task specific training so the joint can handle the demands you return to. Shockwave therapy and other modalities may support stubborn cases. We rebuild confidence step by step and set return to activity milestones. If a complete tear such as an ACL rupture is suspected, we coordinate with your doctor about imaging and a surgical opinion, and lead your rehabilitation either way.

Ligament Injuries questions, answered
Yes. Physiotherapy is central to recovering from most ligament sprains and guides you from early pain control through to full strength, balance and return to activity. Proper rehabilitation also lowers the risk of the joint giving way or spraining again.
Many ligament injuries heal well with rehabilitation and do not need surgery. Complete tears such as an ACL rupture may need a surgical opinion, especially for active people, so we assess the injury and work alongside your doctor to guide that decision.
Mild ankle sprains often settle within a few weeks, while higher grade tears and knee ligament injuries can take several months of rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist gives you a timeline based on the ligament involved and the grade of the injury.
No referral is needed to see our physiotherapists after a sprain, and you can book directly. We offer same-week appointments across our five Grand Cayman clinics and bill CINICO and major insurers directly.
