Sciatica

Sciatica is nerve pain that travels from the lower back into the leg. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care ease the pain and get you moving freely again.

Understanding sciatica

Sciatica is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, from the lower back or buttock down through the leg, sometimes as far as the foot. It usually comes from irritation or compression of a nerve root in the lumbar spine, often due to a bulging disc, tightness in the deep hip muscles, or age related narrowing of the space around the nerve. The pain can be sharp, burning or electric, and may come with numbness, tingling or weakness.

Most sciatica settles well with the right guidance and rarely needs surgery. What matters is understanding why the nerve is irritated, because that shapes the plan. A clear assessment tells us which structures are involved and screens for the small number of cases, such as progressive weakness or bladder changes, that need urgent medical review rather than conservative care.

How we help

Treating sciatica at Rehoboth

Every plan starts with a thorough assessment and a written plan you can actually read. Same-week appointments across five Grand Cayman clinics.

Your first visit is a full assessment of your spine, hips, nerves and movement to confirm the source of your pain and screen for red flags. Early treatment focuses on calming the irritated nerve: hands-on physiotherapy and gentle spinal mobilisation restore movement, while techniques such as dry needling, TENS and heat ease the muscle spasm that often makes sciatica worse.

As symptoms settle we progress to specific nerve mobility work and a graded programme of core, gluteal and hip strengthening to take pressure off the nerve and prevent flare-ups. We coach posture, sitting setup and safe lifting so the relief lasts, and we coordinate with your doctor for imaging or referral when it is warranted. Same-week appointments are available across our five Grand Cayman clinics.

Good to know

Sciatica questions, answered

Yes. Physiotherapy is a first line treatment for sciatica, using hands-on therapy, nerve mobility work and targeted exercise to calm the irritated nerve and restore movement, while addressing the causes so the pain does not keep returning.

Many cases of sciatica ease noticeably within a few weeks of the right treatment and exercise. More stubborn cases take longer, and your physiotherapist sets realistic goals and tracks your progress along the way.

No referral is needed to see our physiotherapists, and most sciatica does not require a scan. Our assessment screens for the few cases that do, and we arrange imaging or refer to a doctor when it is warranted.

Gentle, guided movement usually helps sciatica more than bed rest. We show you which positions and exercises ease your symptoms and which to avoid in the early days, then progress you safely as the nerve calms down.

Yes. We treat sciatica at all five of our Grand Cayman clinics, including George Town, Savannah, Seven Mile Beach and West Bay, with same-week appointments and direct billing to CINICO and major insurers.
