What to expect
Electrical muscle stimulation, or EMS, uses small electrical pulses delivered through pads to make a muscle contract on its own. Unlike TENS, which calms pain through the nerves, EMS works the muscle itself, which is useful when an injury, surgery or long period of rest has left it weak or slow to switch on. At Rehoboth we use it to help wake up muscles that are struggling and to kick start strengthening early in your recovery.
During a session your physiotherapist places pads over the target muscle and sets the pulses so the muscle tightens and relaxes in a steady rhythm. You feel the contraction but it stays comfortable, and we often ask you to work with it by trying to contract the muscle at the same time. EMS is always part of a wider strengthening programme, so as your control returns we shift the focus towards active exercise you drive yourself.

Your visit starts with a full physiotherapy assessment to find which muscles are weak or slow to activate and to confirm that stimulation will help. We explain the plan and give it to you in writing so you know what each stage is working towards.
Stimulation and active work
Your physiotherapist positions the pads over the target muscle and sets a comfortable rhythm of contraction and rest. We usually ask you to contract along with the machine, so the stimulation and your own effort work together to rebuild control and strength.
Progression and review
As your muscle responds we reduce reliance on the machine and build up active exercise you complete yourself. We review your strength and function regularly and adjust the programme so you keep moving forward towards your everyday and sporting goals.
