Percussion Therapy
Percussion therapy uses rapid, targeted pulses to reach deep into tight muscle, easing tension and helping you recover faster from training, work or injury.
What to expect
Percussion therapy uses a handheld device that delivers rapid pulses of pressure deep into the muscle. The fast tapping action is thought to relax tight bands of tissue, boost local blood flow and reduce the soreness that builds up after training or long hours on your feet. At Rehoboth we use it as a focused warm up or recovery tool within a treatment session, softening tissue so hands on therapy and exercise are more effective.
During treatment your physiotherapist guides the device over the muscle, adjusting the speed and pressure to your comfort and the area being worked. It feels like a strong, rhythmic tapping and most people find it satisfying rather than painful. Because it prepares the muscle quickly, percussion therapy pairs well with stretching, manual therapy and a tailored exercise programme, so you leave looser and better able to move and train.

Your percussion therapy journey
Assessment first, a clear written plan, then treatment and review. You always know the next step.
Assessment first
We start with a physiotherapy assessment so we can find the tight or overworked areas and confirm percussion therapy is a good fit for you. If your pain points to something that needs a different approach, we tell you and adjust the plan before we begin.
Percussion treatment
Your physiotherapist works the device over the target muscles, changing the speed and pressure to stay comfortable and effective. It usually takes only a few minutes per area, and we often follow it with stretching or hands on therapy while the tissue is relaxed and responsive.
Exercise and recovery advice
We finish by guiding movement or exercise to lock in the release, and we share simple recovery tips for between visits. If tightness keeps returning we look at the cause, whether that is training load, posture or an underlying weakness, and plan accordingly.
Percussion Therapy questions, answered
It should not. Percussion therapy feels like a strong, rhythmic tapping, and your physiotherapist keeps the pressure at a level that feels good to you. Tender spots may feel intense at first but usually ease quickly.
It uses the same kind of device, but the difference is how it is applied. A physiotherapist targets the right muscles at the right settings as part of a full treatment plan, rather than general use on your own.
That depends on your goals, whether you are recovering from training or easing long standing tightness. We build it into your plan at a frequency that suits you and review how your muscles respond over time.

Magnetotherapy uses pulsed magnetic fields to calm inflammation and encourage healing in bone, joint and soft tissue injuries, without needles or downtime.
Ultrasound Therapy
Therapeutic ultrasound sends focused sound waves deep into the tissues to warm them, ease pain and encourage healing in tendon, muscle and joint problems that are slow to settle.
Laser Therapy
Low level laser therapy uses focused light to reach painful, injured tissue below the skin, helping to reduce pain and support healing without heat or needles.
TENS Therapy
TENS uses gentle electrical pulses delivered through pads on the skin to interrupt pain signals and give drug free relief from acute and long standing pain.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation uses controlled pulses to make weak or inhibited muscles contract, helping to reactivate and rebuild them after injury or surgery.
Manual Therapy and Exercise
Manual therapy combines skilled hands-on techniques with guided exercise to ease back, neck and joint pain and restore natural, comfortable movement.
